30” BA Conductor Repair

Overview

A 30” conductor on a North Sea platform was reported to be defective in numerous locations with the most severe detailed as an area of 180 x 300mm in size and 31% wall loss reported from internal inspection. In addition, there was a crack reported to be propagating from the heavily corroded section, measuring a minimum of 750mm circumferentially around the conductor.

Scope

The scope of work was to provide an engineered design calculation with a 10 year design lifetime. Technowrap™ trained rope access technicians were mobilised to apply the repair, consisting of Technowrap™ SRS materials along with Technowrap™ Splashzone resin.

Challenges

A supportive section of bracing had to be removed from the conductor prior to installation of the repair. Once this was removed, it revealed the extent of the repair. Design calculations had to be amended and a carbon fibre patch was made on site to be used for profiling the repair and part strengthening the defective area.

Solution

Surface preparation to ST2 was carried out to ensure the that best adhesion of the 10 layer Technowrap SRS (carbon fibre) repair system was achieved.

Following the successful installation the integrity of the BA conductor has been restored for a 10 year lifetime.
